If you’re planning to install a new tile floor, you’ll want to avoid making mistakes that could affect the outcome of the job. When you make a mistake in the subfloor or tile underlayment membrane, you’ll have to consider how it will affect the final appearance of the flooring. You may have to go back and start over if it seems as though the outcome will be negatively affected. These tips can help you avoid that situation.

Evaluate the Subfloor

Before you install the tile underlayment membrane, make sure the subfloor is level and rigid. If you find dips in the floor, you can use concrete or another substance to create a more level surface. You should also jump on the subfloor in several areas to test its sturdiness. If you detect movement, you may have to reinforce the subfloor.

Determine if Baseboards Should Be Removed

In many cases, the baseboards are removed and the tiles are set flush against the wall. If you choose to leave the baseboards in place, you can keep the joints hidden by applying shoe molding. This can save you some work and help you complete the project sooner.

Start at the Center

You should begin installing the tiles by locating the center of the room. Once you lay the first tile, rotate in a clockwise direction with each consecutive tile. This should help you reach each wall at relatively the same time. The tiles closest to the walls will have to be measured and cut with a good quality tile knife to fit the available spaces
