Nestled slightly south east of the heart of Texas, lies the Capital city of Austin. The land upon which Austin now lies has been inhabited by humans since approximately 9200 B.C. Jump forward to the 1540’s and you will find the Spaniards inhabiting the area. The Natives referred to the Spaniards as ‘Tayshas’, meaning allies and friends. When the Spanish translated the word into their own language it became tejas, which eventually translated into Texas.
In 1836 Texas decided to become a republic—effectively becoming a country in its own right—and on March 2nd, 1836 it declared its independence from Mexico. It was admitted to the United States on 29th December 1845—the only state to have been a Republic prior to its admission.

Austin was named after Stephen Fuller Austin who was an impresario who lived between 1793 and 1836. He was born in Virginia but raised largely in Missouri. However, he was also crowned the ‘Father of Texas’ because he led the successful colonization of the state by bringing some three hundred new families to set up home there.
During the 1860’s almost thirty-eight percent of the residents of Travis County were slaves. However, by 1861, with the outbreak of the Civil War, fears grew for attacks on anyone who wasn’t part of the Union. The city of Austin contributed many soldiers to the Confederates but after the Emancipation Proclamation the Afro-American population swelled in Austin.
Growth and Education
The Public School came to Austin in 1881 and they held their very first classes in the same years as the Huston-Tillotson University—then the Tillotson Collegiate and Normal Institute—opened. As the city of Austin grew it began, during the 1920’s and 30’s to set up initiatives for civic developments. They began to create city infrastructures and laws and customs, as well as public parks and beautification projects.
