When someone dies, there are a few options to consider when it comes to what is done to the body after death. There are many who choose burial inside of a coffin that is placed into the ground. There are others who choose to be embalmed and placed within a structure that houses the coffin. There are a growing number of others who choose cremation, a process by which the body is burned to its basic elements and placed within an urn or other container. Learn more what is involved in cremation in Antioch and elsewhere below.
What is Cremation?
This refers to the burning of a deceased body to reduce it to its essential elements. This usually involves the body being placed in a cremator (a closed furnace that is specifically designed to dissolve bodies to their main elements). The remaining ashes can then be placed in a memorial site, kept by relatives in urns or other containers, scattered at various locations, or a combination of the above.
What is Involved in This Process?
As mentioned above, the body is burned down to its main elements, which usually include burned bone fragments and other materials. This involves a cremator that reaches very high temperatures in order to achieve total combustion of the body. The remaining ashes can then be handled in a number of ways as mentioned above.
This practice is being utilized by more people in recent years, as it is usually cheaper than burial and provides environmental advantages as compared to burial. It also has a long history, as the practice goes back at least 17,000 years and has been utilized by many cultures throughout history.
