For any job there is a range of different products and materials to consider. Some will result in a slightly higher materials cost, but the end benefits of the choice can make the project easier and provide a better final product. This is certainly true when considering the benefits of seamless steel pipe, and it all starts with how it is made.

The Start

To make seamless steel pipe the first step is in heating a billet, which is a large section of raw steel. It is then pressed through a piercing rod and die system to create a long, continuous hollow shell or hollow pipe. This is called an extrusion and is used to create the each same pipe over and over through the die, giving an extremely accurate final product.

The processing method ensures the wall thickness of the seamless steel pipe is consistent to provide continuous resistance to internal and external pressure along the length of the pipe. The uniformity of the pipe is essential in all types of construction and uses.

It is called seamless steel pipe because there is no need to weld the pipe to join the two sides or edges. Without the weld, there is no weak point in the pipe, which is an important consideration in many types of applications. This means selecting the size of pipe with regards to pressure is much easier, and there are far few issues with possible problems in weld quality.

Uniform Circumference

One of the reasons many contractors prefer seamless steel pipe is because of the uniformity of the size, shape and circumference of the pipe. As it is produced continuously and is not constantly heated through the welding processes, there is no risk for even slight imperfections in the shape and circumference of the pipe often seen with the high temperatures during welding.

This translates into increased strength and resistance to pressure. However, it also means no matter where you cut the pipe you will have a perfect cross section to thread and match with fittings without the risk of leaks and problems.

With its natural strength and uniformity of shape, seamless steel pipe is a natural match over long runs for any type of industrial, commercial or construction use. Without the inherent welds to cause possible stress issues it is a solid, dependable and versatile pipe for a wide variety of different applications and uses.
