When it comes to winning, perhaps the only thing that may be harder than playing the game, is leading the team to victory. A lot of skill and strategy goes into the develop and leading a team, so much that it’s easy to become overwhelmed. The good news is you don’t have to claw your way to success on your own. There are multiple resources to help coaches guide their teams to success , including a book by Super Bowl™© winning Defensive Coach Bob Slowik and his Leadership Course depicting skills he learned from his career coaching in the National Football League. For a quick jump start, here is a list of tips on how to become the best coach you can be.

Don’t Get Hung up on Your Failures

Even coaches of the world’s most successful teams have moments of poor judgment and times where they and/or their team have failed. Don’t beat yourself up for making mistakes, or for those moments where your team doesn’t perform as well as you all hoped. These times are completely normal. All you can do is examine what went wrong and try to improve. No matter the degree of your mistakes, you can always learn from your mistakes and lead your team to a better outcome. Trial and error with reflection can be a good source of learning, albeit a hard and arduous one. A better course of action might be to consider taking a course from those who have traveled your path or read what others who have tried, failed and eventually succeeded have to say.

Get to Know Your Team

Learning how to guide your team properly will take both education on good coaching and motivating methods as well as putting in effort and time to get to know your team on an intimate level. Learn about your players as individuals. Gain a sense of their strengths and weaknesses, both as individual skill players and as a team. In doing this, you can better counsel them on which areas they can improve upon to take their game to the next level. For an inside view of leading a team, visit X’s, O’s & Beyond.
