Cosmetic dentists in Atlanta provide various services aimed at improving the appearance of a patient’s teeth and offer a variety of services which include veneers, crowns, teeth whitening, bridges, dental bonding, and different restorations such as dental implants. Here are a few things that you might not know about your cosmetic dentistry options.

What are crowns?

Crowns are a cap that fits over a problem tooth and completely encapsulates it. Modern dental crowns can be made from gold, other metals, porcelain, or resin. They typically last between 5 and fifteen years and can vastly increase the aesthetic appeal of your smile. A new technology called CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) allows cosmetic dentists in Atlanta to manufacture custom crowns on-site, which means you can get your crowns completed in just one visit. With this technology, you don’t need to get temporary crowns, and you don’t need to wait several weeks for a dental lab to make their crowns.

CEREC has CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology that takes impressions of the patient’s teeth and then fabricates the crown. It uses a single block of material to make the crown, and the result will be sturdier and more durable than a conventionally made crown.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are restorations used for replacing lost teeth. The implant itself is an artificial tooth root that looks like a screw and will support an artificial tooth. The implant is typically made of titanium which has a couple of advantages. Titanium biocompatible, which means the patient’s body won’t reject it, and it can also fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration, which means it will be securely attached to the jawbone like a natural tooth.

Candidates for dental implants and other cosmetic dentistry procedures can be any age, but they do have to be in good health. They have to have enough bone in their jaw to support the implant, for example, and patients can’t have any diseases that can cause a bone to degenerate. People with low sinuses are generally not good candidates, and patients who have undergone chemotherapy for bone cancer are also not good candidates.
