Soho is a common name for many city suburbs around the world. The two most famous ‘Soho’ areas are the one in London, England and the one in New York City. The London Soho is a well-established entertainment center of the English capitol. Centered around the Berwick Street market, Broad Street and Old Compton Street, Soho was also known as a gathering place for many sex shops in the late twentieth century. Until 1536 the area that is now soho was simply grazing land, but Henry VIII took it to form part of land for the Palace of Whitehall. Unlike the New York SoHo, the English Soho was allegedly named after a hunting cry when fox hunting was commonplace.
The New York SoHo derived its name from the location on which it sits, namely, ‘SOuth of HOuston’ Street. The area is part of Manhattan and is famous for its arts centers and attraction for the artistic crowds. Many a converted loft apartment has been occupied by one type of artist or another over the last thirty or forty years. The boom in Condos in SoHo is largely attributed to a growth in the area caused by the artistic community making the area more hospitable. At one time, the ailing area was more or less derelict, with tumbledown and decrepit buildings, but the loft conversion idea repopulated the area and now, major businesses also have their headquarters in the same area. The economy has boosted the SoHo area and now it contains landmarks such as Greenwich Village, to the north, Hudson Square and Chinatown to the surrounding area.
