If you plan to make the pilgrimage to Machu Picchu in Peru, be sure you come prepared. Make sure you pack according to your actual needs. This is particularly important if your Machu Picchu trip includes hiking any of the Inca trails.

Packing for the Hike to Machu Picchu

Whatever you do, do not wait until the last minute to pack. Prepare in advance. This means creating a list of specific needs for the trip. You must include everything that makes the trip easier for you. In many instances – unless you decide to go it alone on one of the lesser trails, employees of your tour agency carry the bulk of the items. However, you are responsible for your own personal belongings. The result, whether going solo or with a group, can be wearying and difficult unless you follow this simple rule and Pack Light.

Packing light means taking only the essentials for your Machu Picchu trip. If you plan to stay longer and tour the rest of the country – and Peru has many sights worth visiting, bring more items. Just jettison all but the necessities for the actual hike.

Packing the Basics for a Machu Picchu Trip

On a hike not requiring you to haul a sleeping bag and tent, it makes sense to take only what you need. Generally, this means:

  • Passport
  • Clothes – weather savvy and comfortable, e.g. tank top, long-sleeved – layering for cold weather, stripping for warmer weather
  • Warm jacket – fleece or polar
  • Weatherproof jacket
  • Trekking pants as well as something to change into when you reach your destination
  • Thermal pajamas
  • Couple pairs of underwear and socks
  • Comfortable and functional shoes – hiking boots and sneakers
  • Lightweight sunhat
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Water bottle

If you can, talk to someone who has already made the hike in Peru and ask for advice. This can help you pack the right items for a Machu Picchu trip.
