Art therapy is a field of mental health study and a human service profession that serves clients through therapeutic art-making. It is a process that includes the application of psychological theory and creative practice in a therapeutic relationship.

Where Do Art Therapists Practice?

Art therapists work in a variety of professional settings with diverse client populations. Most often, art therapists work with clients in mental health, rehabilitation, and medical setting. They can also find work in educational and private practice settings, helping people in couple, family, and group therapy clinical formats.

What Skills Do Art Therapists Need?

To practice art therapy, a professional must complete a Master’s degree and professional licensure in the field. These art therapy programs help students to develop both artistic and counseling skills needed for the field.

What Do Art Therapy Programs Teach?

Courses in art therapy programs include the visual arts, teaching students about advanced drawing, painting, and crafts. Programs also include coursework in human development, psychology and counseling, teaching students how to provide therapeutic mental health services.

Comprehensive art therapy degree programs may also include a practicum experience, providing students with an opportunity to work with real patients while under the supervision of an experienced art therapist. Additionally, an internship and a senior thesis project are often required. As part of the internship and senior thesis, students learn first-hand how art therapists work with individuals or groups to help improve well-being through creative expression.
