When it comes to the issue of Muslim clothing, the result is one fraught with arguments on whether strict support of traditional clothing is the correct approach to take. Some prefer to modernize Muslim garb while others wish to discard it entirely. Often those against any obvious indications of Muslim are those who want to fit in to modern Western society. Yet, there is one way of retaining belief in one’s culture, supporting one’s religious beliefs and still not worry about “fitting in.” For women, this is by choosing to wear Islamic skirts.

What are Islamic Skirts?
Some may argue that the specific length is a definitive indicator of religious differences. This is a fallacy. Throughout history, the length of skirts has varied considerably. During the Roaring Twenties, the skirt length was short. This was mimicked during the Swinging Sixties. Yet, in both the 1800s and during the 1960s, skirt lengths were also very long. Long skirts have traditionally always been associated with modesty if not virginity. In the fashion world, long skirts have spanned generations. They have been flashy or plain. They have been tasteful and tacky. It takes more than length to define an outfit as being of a particular religious nature.

In fact, the only true difference between Islamic skirts and skirts found in modern North American and European current cultures is the intent. According to Muslim cultural beliefs, skirts are acceptable as appropriate female apparel if they adhere to the following principles:

1. They do note display any part of the anatomy
2. They are not form-fitting
3. They are not sheer and/or see through
4. They are not man-like in appearance or design
5. It is not meant to attract undue attention
6. It is not decorated or designed so as to attract the eyes of males

These designated requirements are what make an Islamic skirt different from those worn by others.

Advantages of Wearing Islamic Skirts
While Islamic long skirts may reach the ankles, they do have advantages over other types of Islamic dress. Long skirts allow women to remain modest but do not interfere with the performance of many practical types of work. Islamic skirts are practical, immensely wearable and easy to handle most types of employment.

What may even be more important is availability and versatility. You can wear a skirt to a wide variety of events. This includes special occasions. Skirts can quickly be paired with a variety of tops to achieve different looks. Moreover, in places where finding Muslim clothing can be challenging skirts are readily available. Any store in North America has skirts for sale. While some purists may believe women are skirting the issue when they opt for Islamic skirts, they are ignoring the practical reasons behind such decisions. They are also forgetting that it is the intent, not the fabric, the embroidery or the stylish design, that will show through.
