Technically, general bike repairs are not too complicated. With the right tools and techniques, it’s possible to get a defective bike back on the road.

A Flat Tire

At some point, every bicycle owner will have to deal with a flat tire. If your tire is ever droopy, don’t panic. Instead, check the pressure with a tire pressure gauge.

If a tire is completely flat, add more air with an air pump without overfilling the tire, and never bypass its pressure range for safety reasons. The pressure range is set by the tire manufacturer. It’s printed on the side of a tire near the threads.

A Slipped Chain

When a chain slips out of place, it can create a sense of dread. If this ever happens to you, find a safe spot, grab the chain, and follow these steps:

  • Find the rear clog on the bike.
  • Place the chain in the bottom groove on the rear clog.
  • Carefully align the chain over the teeth that are positioned on the top chainring.
  • Gradually move the pedal forward to reestablish the chain.

Loose Bolts

All bikes are held together with nuts and bolts. When you ride a bike, your actions create friction that can loosen the nuts and bolts that hold your bike together. For this reason, you should always check your handlebars, seat post, and stem before you head out. The nuts and bolts in these areas should be secure. They should not be too loose or too firm.
