Temporary employees, seasonal employees, and part-time employees are all different categories of workers for a business, each of which is defined in a specific way. Understanding the difference between each of these can go a long way toward ensuring you are looking for the right type of employees for your business needs.

Part-time employees are often defined as employees who work fewer than 35 hours a week, whereas a full-time employee will often work 40 hours or more. Most part-time employees are paid an hourly wage and are required to follow all company guidelines and rules. However, they typically do not receive full benefits, such as health insurance, sick time, and paid holidays.

Federal law mandates that part-time employees be treated the same way as full-time employees as far as things like overtime pay, minimum wage, and child labor. They are also covered by OSHA policies for health and safety. In addition, part-time workers who do 1,000 or more hours of work in a year may also be eligible for retirement benefits.

On the other hand, temporary employees are those workers who are hired to cover a temporary vacancy or absent employee’s position. Temp workers are sometimes hired from a staffing company, which means they are being leased from the company that provides the employee. Most of these agencies charge a certain rate over the rate of compensation to cover their services.

Temp workers can be hired in all types of industries, and sometimes may lead to permanent employment. They are most often used as labor for a specific time period, however. These workers may work full or part-time and can be at one or more staffing agencies at once. The staffing company typically takes care of all their benefits and wages.

Seasonal employees are people who are hired part-time for a specific season, such as the holiday season. With higher shopping demands, these positions are common in retail companies. Seasonal workers must be given minimum wage and are entitled to overtime, as well. Those who are out of work might choose a seasonal job to bring in some money for the holidays or to pay their bills.
