Bringing home your cute new puppy makes the world a brighter place. You will share countless hours of joy together, but you have to be responsible in caring for the little guy or gal. The main responsibility for any new puppy owner is to make sure that it gets the proper vaccinations and shots. Here’s what you need to know about what types of vaccinations are necessary and when you should get them. Of course you need to consult with your veterinarian and not all breeds have the same needs or timetable, but the basics are fairly standard.
DHLPPC – This is a combination vaccine and the main one your new puppy will get to start off. DHLPPC is an acronym for the diseases that the vaccine protects your dog from. In this case, they are distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, and coronavirus. The timeline for this vaccine to be administered is in the 6-8 week area. After that you’ll usually need to get booster shots of the vaccine at around the 9th, 12th and 16th week with a yearly revaccination after that.
Rabies – Vaccination against rabies is still very important, but it is subject to state laws, so when you need to get it will depend upon where you live. Generally, your dog should be vaccinated against rabies at around the 16 week mark with revaccination ranging from every one to three years after that.
Bordetella – If you think your puppy might have to be boarded or put in a kennel within the first 6 months, then you probably should get the Bordetella vaccine to prevent against “kennel cough” at around the 14 week mark. This will protect your pup from both infection and transmission of the virus. The revaccination interval is every 6 months.
Lyme disease – If your pup will be outdoors a good bit and might be exposed to ticks, then you should have it vaccinated against Lyme disease. You should get the first vaccination against Lyme disease at around 14 weeks with a revaccination interval every 12 months.
