Water that is high in calcium and magnesium is known as hard water. The combination of the two, create minerals that leave deposits that adhere to tile, glass, and other material. It eventually clogs up drains, causes toilets and bathtubs to stain, and leaves a residue or film on your skin and hair. It requires additional time, money, and cleaning to get rid of the lime deposits repeatedly. The best solution is to soften your water, which means eliminate the calcium and magnesium minerals to avoid mineral deposits. Take a look at the ways that you can soften your water.

What to Do Before Softening Your Water

Before you soften your water to prevent lime scale, you should figure out some things about your water. Here’s what you need to know:

Do you have hard water? Prior to softening your water, make sure that you have hard water in the first place. There are high concentrations of hard water in states like Arizona, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, and California just to name a few. You can determine if you live in a hard water region by getting information from your (1) water department, (2) city government, or (3) local water testing lab (take a water sample in and have it tested).

Does your soap lather well? When you use dishwashing liquid, soap, cleaning products, or laundry detergent take a look to see if it foams and lathers. If you notice a lot of foaming action, then your water is probably okay. If you have to pour a lot of soap, then your water is most likely hard.

Decide what method you want to use to soften your water? You have options when it comes to softening your water so research your options. See what works and doesn’t work for people who are dealing with lime scale too. Lime scale cleaning or removal products are great, but you’ll want to find a solution that will prevent lime scale from occurring.

How to Soften Water

Boil your water before drinking. Wait a few minutes after you boil the water so that it can cool a bit. You’ll see lime particles floating at the top of the water. Get something to scoop the top layer of the water out. On the other hand, you can let the water sit longer and let the particles drop to the bottom. Then you can scoop most of the water out for use and leave the bottom layer where all the lime particles are sitting.

Use a water filter. It’s not hard to find. You can find a water filter in several stores. You can even pick up a water pitcher that comes with a filter. You can use the filtered water as drinking water, or use it to make coffee, tea, or any other beverage you typically consume.

Install a water descaling system. You can choose a descaler as a more permanent solution to prevent lime scale problems. It will attach to your water line and stop lime deposits from forming. You water supply will be soft and mineral deposit-free.
