Some valve applications allow for two-way operation, and fluid can easily flow in both directions. However, check valves have one-way mechanisms which only allow flow in a single direction. Check Valve Principles

Check valves are also called clack valves or one-way valves. These valves have two separate openings. One allows fluid to enter while the other prevents it from entering. Many clack valves run on electricity or pneumatics. Check valve suppliers carry many sizes and shapes, and you’ll see them in standard household items and large industrial applications. Clack valves don’t need handles or stems.

Pressure Considerations

When you look for valves, it’s best to understand the three pressure considerations:

  • Cracking – inlet pressure where flow first occurs and it’s the minimal upstream pressure for valve operation.
  • Back pressure- difference between outlet and inlet
  • Reseal – pressure where flow stops

Valve Types

Check valve suppliers may carry more than one kind of clack valve. Here are some of the types you may see:

  • Ball valves – simple and inexpensive. A spring-loaded ball mechanism keeps the ball against the opening, and the valve stays closed. When fluid pressure is high, it presses against the ball, opening the valve. Once fluid flow stops, the spring returns the ball to the closed position.
  • Diaphragm – instead of a ball, a diaphragm opens and closes the mechanism.
  • Swing – works like a toilet flap flush valve. In fact, toilet flaps are swing valves.
