Has your pet recently been to a veterinary hospital? Whether he or she had minor surgery or had major surgery, post operative care is essential for helping your pet heal. Follow your veterinary hospital guidelines for care for your pet after their surgery. Your vet will go over any directions with you. But here are some additional tips to help you maximize your pet’s chance of healing well.

Cleanliness

Cleanliness is important. A clean area for sleeping, litter boxes, cages, or other areas is important for helping your pet heal, particularly if he or she has sutures. Extra care is important in following the veterinary hospital’s guidelines for taking care of your animal as well as for the surrounding area. A thorough cleaning before the pet comes home can make a big difference. Watch for signs of infection. Your veterinary hospital can provide some information about things to watch for regarding infected wounds or ripping of sutures, etc.

Relaxation

Your pet should be encouraged to rest but in many cases the pet will rest the best if you are nearby for assurance and tender loving care. Plan to keep rowdy and active play to a minimum after a pet gets home from the veterinary hospital, if possible. Avoiding excessive company could be a good idea.

Other Pets and Kids

Other pets and kids could all get your pet riled up and this could lead to problems. Your pet might get excited and / or rambunctious at the sight of a playmate. It may be necessary to segregate the recovering pet in order to avoid problems from play, from roughhousing, or from another pet that might attempt to exert dominance due to your pet being less than at 100 per cent.

Watching your pet’s bathroom habits, their eating and drinking habits, and their overall demeanor is important. While it can take time after a medical procedure for your pet to feel like themselves again, watch for signs that there are post-surgical complications. Again, your vet will help you get an idea of things to watch for that are signs your pet is on the road to recovery.
