Drug addiction does not discriminate. It does not matter your race, social status or age, it can affect any person, in any walk of life. There are many different types of addiction that can affect someone’s life in a negative way. A number of rehabilitation programs exist to aid people in freeing themselves from their addictions. Finding the right Malibu addiction treatment center is essential to overcoming the issue for good. The following are a few different types of addictions that affect people all around the world.

Alcohol

Alcohol addiction can affect the user’s health and mind in a very negative way. The liver takes the most abuse from continuous use of alcohol and eventually the addict could develop cirrhosis. Cirrhosis prevents your liver from functioning properly and can be fatal in most cases. The effects to the mind are usually short term memory loss and dementia related to prolonged use of alcohol.

Most people are able to drink in social situations with little to no effect on their over health and well-being. An addict is very different, because they crave the alcohol and can often go into withdrawals that may produce seizures. The repeated use of alcohol causes the addict’s brain chemistry to change and therefore worsens the effects of not having the alcohol. Many addicts cannot just stop drinking without serious side effects and most of the time the addict has to wean off slowly, because these side effects have caused death in some severe cases.

Drug Addiction

There are many different drugs a person can become addicted to, whether it is prescription or street drugs. All types of drugs can be very hazardous to your physical and mental health. Over a period of time, an addict will develop immunity to the effects of the drugs. This will make the addict take higher and higher doses to achieve the high they are seeking. The repeated increase of intake can cause overdoses that lead to brain damage or death.

Depending on the type of drugs the addict is taking, the side effects can range from mental diseases to cardiovascular issues. Many addicts have to slowly reduce the intake so that the withdrawals from the drugs are not so severe. Generally, the drugs will leave the user malnourished and severely deficient in many essential nutrients that help the body stay well.

Tobacco

The use of tobacco is probably among the hardest addictions to break. Regular tobacco users can suffer from a plethora of potential health risks such as cancer or heart disease. The overwhelming number of tobacco users has led to the rise in heart related deaths. The deadly chemicals found in tobacco such as nicotine and tar is very harmful to the body and makes the tobacco products highly addictive. Many tobacco users try several times before they are able to quit the habit for good. Second hand smoke has also been known to cause cancer even in non-users, which only drives home the point of how dangerous the use of tobacco is for everyone.
