There are various types of aluminum alloy created specifically for different types of industrial applications. When it comes to requiring strength and lightweight combinations 7075 T6 aluminum is considered the go-to option in the aerospace industry.

Uses

Considered one of the highest strength options in all the aluminum alloys 7075 T6 aluminum is particularly effective for use in parts where high stress is a consideration. This includes frames and aircraft fittings, shafts used in the engine component and wings, as well as use in gears and even in parts for missiles in the military.

It can also be used in other structural types of applications within the aerospace industry. With its qualities of hardness combined with the ability to be relatively easily machined it is favorable to work with for many applications. However, 7075 T6 aluminum is not recommended for welding using either arc welding or gas welding processes. Most welding using this aluminum will be resistance welding, and this is the preferred method of joining.

7075 T6 aluminum is also commonly used to form molds for the plastic industry. With all the different uses this is one of the most commonly requested options for many different specialized uses.

Analysis

The actual analysis of 7075 T6 aluminum willed be determined by the specific standards required for the part or component. Within the alloy there are minimal amounts of manganese, silicon, chromium, iron and titanium. Larger percentages of copper, zinc and magnesium complete the alloy and add to the natural corrosion resistance of the alloy.

Zinc is the primary alloying element and this, combined with the presence of chromium, gives the product excellent stress-corrosion cracking resistance in all applications. Copper is another important consideration in the alloy and with the T6 temper it actually has more strength than other metal alloy sheets also used in the aerospace industry.

General Information

As with most types of alloy, 7075 T6 aluminum is available in plate, round and in special order sizes as well. Different thicknesses are also possible to accommodate any requirements for special orders.

There are also other tempers offered besides 7075 T6 aluminum sheets. This can include the T6, T73, and T76 types. To understand which option is best for a specific application it is important to consult with an engineer and determine which alloy, including, and which temper is the best for each individual part or component.

At Howard Precision Metals we have a good inventory of 7075 T6 aluminum and can also accommodate for special orders. To learn more see us at Howardprecision.com.
