Vaping is still new, and, like with most new things, there’s a certain amount of hysteria attached to it. Most of this hysteria is health related and connected to nicotine. As we all know, cigarettes contain nicotine and cause cancer and many people think this means nicotine causes cancer.
But there’s a lot of “stuff” inside a cigarette beside nicotine. In fact, there are thousands of different chemicals which can affect the body in different ways. The worst is tar. This oily sticky mass causes cancer. It builds up in the lungs over time and can cause other health problems, too. In short, most of the problems associated with cigarettes are caused by the tar.
Nicotine itself is not carcinogenic. It is a mild drug, chemically similar to caffeine. It stimulates the body, making you feel more alert. Vaping is not the only way to get nicotine without a cigarette. For decades, we’ve had nicotine gum and patches, and other treatments to replace cigarettes, for people who want to quit smoking.
Like most drugs, it’s possible to overdose on nicotine. It’s safe to say it’s highly unlikely to happen through vaping. But, drinking or swallowing e-liquid is never recommended and can actually be quite dangerous. That’s why it’s important to keep refill bottles away from children.
Of course, it’s going to take some time for the public to adjust to vaping. And there are always going to be some who misunderstand it. But in the meantime, at least you know it’s safe!
