Generally speaking, it is always best to use an expert, whenever possible, to help solve a major problem. When it comes to finding a Doctor for a particular problem, there are experts in the various fields of medicine. They’re often called Specialists.

The specialty in the area of substance abuse is called Addiction Medicine. Any Physician who is an Addiction Medicine Specialist must be Board Certified in Addiction Medicine. That means, the Physician must have had all of the appropriate training and must have also passed a test which is conducted by The American Board of Addiction Medicine.

So, a Board Certified Addiction Medicine Specialist is an expert in the area of Addiction Medicine. He or she is known as an Addictionologist. Unfortunately, any Physician may call themselves an Addictionologist, whether they have met all of the requirements or not. That is why it’s very important, to find out about the Physician’s board certification status.

Now sometimes, one may learn that a particular Physician is Board Eligible, but not Board Certified. This means, the Physician has met all the necessary training requirements; but he or she has NOT yet passed the standard examination.

Finding an expert means determining if the Physician is Board Certified in the certain field of medicine which is being pursued. It is always best to find an expert to help you, as he or she is most qualified to diagnose and treat diseases in that specialty. Let’s face it, don’t you think that you deserve the best care available?

Often times, there are more Board Certified Specialists associated with a major medical school/teaching hospital. But there are Addictionologists in private practice, in the community as well. When you call for an appointment, be sure to ask about the Doctor’s Board Certification status.
