This may sound a strange question but it somehow exemplifies today’s use of insider jargon where the words have a very precise meaning to a select few in the know. OK, the word “watches” has long had more than one meaning but, in this context, it obviously refers to looking at these Digital Signage Display Monitors. But the total meaning of the phrase has not yet been clarified.

A digit is a number but the adjective “digital” has become almost totally associated with computerization. Signage is one of our own American words specifically covering any sort of commercial or public display signs. To display something usually means to show it and this includes presenting data or images on a computer, TV or, cinema screen. With this meaning, the display can also be an electronic device for the visual presentation of data.

That Leaves The Monitor

The origin of monitor is to warn. So a monitor would be a person or a device that listens to; or watches over, something for a period of time to provide surveillance and issue a warning if necessary. But, in this current context, we are not considering the Digital Signage Display Monitors to be the people who continuously watch the signs being shown on computer (or other) displays. In much of today’s usage, the monitor is the computer’s digital display screen and these screens are often used to show information to anyone in their proximity.

Whatever information someone wants to transmit to others can be fed into a computer and converted into the required graphical display. It could be advertorial in nature or, directional or, relating to time schedules. It is all information to be shared as easily and as widely as possible in a manner that attracts people’s attention. There are many ways in which this could be done but, since we are all familiar with getting information from TV, computer or cinema screens; Digital Signage Display Monitors sort of automatically make us want to stop and see what is going on.

The Monitor Itself Is The Key

Computerized display signs can be placed both inside and out of doors and the main attraction has to lie in their size. Even something on the wall in (say) a dentist’s reception area has to be large enough to be clearly seen by everyone. A roadside sign announcing the attractions of the next town needs to be large enough to be spotted and read from a passing auto.

Digital Signage Display Monitors these days will have flat screens which can be placed inside weather proofed panels for outdoor use. They will probably use the more advanced forms of LCD technology so that their message can be read from the widest of viewing angles; even in the brightest sunshine.
